Manual of Vascular Plants of Northeastern United States and Adjacent Canada, Second Edition.
Henry A. Gleason and Arthur Cronquist. The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458. 1991. 910 pp. Hardcover. $74.60 (includes postage). ISBN 0-89327-365-1.

The first edition of Gleason and Cronquist, published in 1963, had long ago replaced M. L. Fernald's 8th edition of Gray's Manual of Botany (1950) as the standard field manual of northeastern botany. The new edition of Gleason and Cronquist is a welcome replacement for dog-eared, field-stained copies of the fast edition. Rearranged according to the phylogenetic system of Cronquist, the second edition reflects the numerous taxonomic changes of the last twenty years. There have been so many changes, in fact, that you will have to relearn the scientific names of dozens of plants! An updated manual for eastern North America has been needed for many years and this volume fulfills that need.
