The American Herbal Products Association at 40
By Karen Raterman

Founded in 1982, the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA) is now a leading trade association with members around the world. AHPA has weathered some of the largest challenges the US herb industry has faced, including regulatory issues and government pushback, and given its members access to valuable resources in areas including product integrity, labeling and marketing guidelines, legislative and regulatory advocacy, and more. The organization has also produced several important books such as the Botanical Safety Handbook and Herbs of Commerce. ABC Guest Contributor Karen Raterman interviewed past and present leaders of the organization to tell the story of how AHPA started, how it has kept going, and what plans it has for the future. Read more >>

Ginseng Diggers cover
Ginseng Diggers: A History of Root and Herb Gathering in Appalachia was written by Luke Manget, PhD, and published by The University Press of Kentucky in 2022. The excerpt includes the title page, table of contents, and introduction: “From ‘Roots and Herbs’ to ‘Crude Botanical Drugs.’”

Wild American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) has played an integral role in the lives of those living in the Appalachian Mountains. Root digging and herb gathering were — and remain — an important source of income, and as the production of patent medicines and botanical pharmaceutical products escalated, southern Appalachia emerged as a prolific supplier of many species of native medicinal plants. Based on his extensive research into the business records of mountain entrepreneurs, country stores, and pharmaceutical companies, historian Luke Manget explores how Appalachia became the nation’s premier purveyor of botanical drugs in the late 19th century and how the trade influenced the way residents of the region interacted with each other and the forests around them.
