Mushrooms of the Gulf Coast States: A Field Guide to Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida was written by Alan E. Bessette, Arleen F. Bessette, and David P. Lewis and published in 2019 by University of Texas Press. The excerpt includes the title page, table of contents, preface, and introduction.

Mushrooms of the Gulf Coast States is a user-friendly field guide that features more than 1,000 common and lesser-known species — some of which are being illustrated in color for the first time.

Using physical characteristics and a color key, readers can learn about the numerous species of mushrooms encountered in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Each entry includes information on edibility or toxicity, and the text also adds detailed instructions for collecting, cleaning, testing, preserving, and cooking wild mushrooms.
