American Botanical Council Will Celebrate
8th Annual HerbDay in Austin on May 4

(AUSTIN, Texas, April 12, 2013) On Saturday, May 4th, the American Botanical Council (ABC) will celebrate the 8th Annual HerbDay with a variety of herbal activities including presentations from local herbal experts Ellen Zimmermann, Founder and Director of the Austin School of Herbal Studies, and Mark Blumenthal, ABC’s Founder and Executive Director. The day will also include herbalist-led tours of ABC’s expansive 20+ medicinal- and culinary-themed gardens. HerbDay activities at ABC will start at 10 am and last until 4 pm. HerbDay will be held at ABC’s headquarters, the historic Case Mill Homestead, 6200 Manor Road in Austin. The celebration is free and open to the public.

The first herbal walk will start at 10:30 am and will be led by Nicole Telkes, Founder and Director of the Wildflower School of Botanical Medicine. Bio-Star Botanicals Owner and Formulator Carlos Hernandez, will lead the second herb walk beginning at 1:15 pm. Each herb walk will last approximately 45 minutes.
The day’s first herbal talk will begin at noon and will be led by Zimmermann, a licensed counselor as well as an herbalist. Zimmermann studied under the renowned “Godmother of American Herbalism” Rosemary Gladstar. Zimmermann’s talk will center on “Local Herbs for Everyday Use.” Blumenthal will begin speaking at 2:30 pm on “The Growth and Public Acceptance of Herbs and Medicinal Plants in America Today—Good News About New Research on the Health Benefits of Herbs.”
ABC’s HerbDay celebration will also provide participants plenty of time to explore ABC’s 20+ medicinal and culinary herb gardens on their own. ABC will also hold a plant sale throughout the day. This is a great way for HerbDay visitors to add to their own gardens (or possibly start one), while supporting ABC’s essential nonprofit educational mission.
Children’s activities will take place throughout the day. There will be a maypole dance — the hit of last year’s celebration — and a planting station for kids to start their own garden projects from either a seed or a starter plant.
Refreshments, books, and membership information will be available in addition to free sample issues of ABC’s highly acclaimed, full-color, scientific, peer-reviewed quarterly journal, HerbalGram, and other educational literature.
