Avena sativa (Poaceae), called oat, oats, green oat, or milky oat, is native to Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and northern Central Asia, and is cultivated throughout the world. All aboveground parts of the plant are used, but the grain, in its green or "milky" stage, is used for anxiety, stress, mental exhaustion, bladder weakness, and as a rejuvenative tonic and restorative.

The American Botanical Council (ABC) is passionate about helping people live healthier lives through the responsible use of herbs and medicinal plants. As an independent, nonprofit education organization, ABC is dedicated to providing accurate and reliable information for consumers, healthcare practitioners, researchers, educators, industry and the media.
