Melissa officinalis is an herbaceous perennial in the mint family (Lamiaceae) native to the Mediterranean, southern Europe, and western Asia. Lemon balm is a calming herb used for tenseness, restlessness, irritability, as well as for digestive complaints and externally for cold sores.
