Notes for Advanced Searches
Search by REFERENCES
The HerbMedProTM search engine supports Boolean operators: AND, OR, and NOT to refine your search. For example: allergy AND pollen will narrow your search and return only references that are related to pollen allergy; allergy OR rhinitis will broaden your search and return references to either term; allergy NOT pollen will narrow your search to mentions of allergy that are not pollen related. Up to five Booleans can be used by using the six keyword screens.
The Advanced Search also supports "wildcards" sometimes known as "fuzzy" queries. There is no need to use an asterisk. Your query will automatically be broadened to to include different versions of a word. For example, immun will be expanded to include: immune, immunization, immunity, etc.
Under Fields to Search, you can choose to search different fields in combination with the keywords, by selecting Summary, or Author, or References, or PubMed ID. So you may use the keywords to specify a specific year, in combination with journal keywords, then select the References button.
If you select the PubMedID button, you cannot combine this with keywords.
You can narrow your entire search to one specific herb by selecting from the pull down list of herbs.
All searches using the Search by REFERENCES top screen will return specific references with their HerbMed summary. The returns are ranked according to the number of relevant references for a particular herb.
The simple search entry panel on the Home Page defaults to the Search by References but using only one keyword and searching only the summaries. Results will return specific references with their HerbMed summary. The returns are ranked according to the number of relevant references for a particular herb.
