In January the American Botanical Council launched its first membership campaign and the response has been extremely positive. Friends of ABC and HerbalGram subscribers who could not support ABC as major donors were able to show their commitment to the organization and its mission through memberships at levels affordable to everyone. From January to June, ABC enrolled more than 1,700 Charter Members. While there was a large wave of new memberships after the initial announcement, a steady flow of new supporters continues.
There is a great deal of excitement about the premium packets that have been mailed and the value of benefits available to members. “Members find that by upgrading their membership to the Academic or Professional level, they receive not only the merchandise discount from Herbal Education Catalog, but also our unique HerbClip research summary service as a CD-ROM and access online on our website. This is an incredible, time-saving resource,” notes Paula Atkinson, in the sales and customer service department. HerbClip and many other information resources will soon appear only in the members’ password-protected section of the new website (see accompanying article, page 9).
One of the most valuable new benefits is the free 20 minutes of research from ABC’s education department and reduced rates for additional research. “We have many valuable resources at our fingertips and we are very happy to respond to research requests,” said Tanja Kunz, Education Assistant. She added that the education department answers many calls each week from members with “everything from detailed scientific inquiries about pharmacological action to questions about appropriate uses for a specific herb.”
The membership program is critical to providing needed funding for ABC’s educational mission. An enrollment form can be found on page 2 of this issue. Interested readers can also find out more about the premiums and benefits and join ABC online through our secure ordering system at www.herbalgram.org. Current members will be automatically entered into the password-protected system of the new website. Look for information on the new home page this fall.
