By Connor Yearsley

But now, honeybees are facing an existential threat because of a lethal combination of factors, including disease. After observing honeybees ingest fungi, mycologist Paul Stamets wondered if fungi could help. Fire Cider! 101 Zesty Recipes for Health-Boosting Remedies Made with Apple Cider Vinegar was written by Rosemary Gladstar and friends and published in 2019 by Storey Publishing. The excerpt includes the table of contents and a selection from Chapter 1, “Apple Cider Vinegar: A Brief Biography.”

Since its inception in 1980 at Rosemary Gladstar’s California School of Herbal Studies, fire cider has evolved from a simple vinegar concoction for the immune system to a movement within herbalism. This text contains Gladstar’s original recipe plus 100 variations from herbalists around North America. The contributors and Gladstar also share stories along with their recipes, and include suggestions for taking the tonic beyond the medicine chest to culinary preparations such as drinks, vegan “cheese,” salad dressing, and many more. Fire Cider! aims to inspire the reader to improve wellness and vitality through a community tradition.

Fire Cider! can be purchased from a variety of online retailers. ©2020 Storey Publishing. Excerpted from Fire Cider! by Rosemary Gladstar. Used with permission from Storey Publishing.
